(See married to music & each other page.)įrequently joined by gifted flutist and good friend Paul Harris, ODNT has performed in many local music venues along the Hudson Valley as well as such far-flung spots as the Music Box in Craftsbury, VT the Box Car Brew Pub outside Philadelphia and the Duplex in New York City. ![]() Some of their favorite musicians are also married couples. ![]() They say about being a married couple who is also a musical duo, “What a gift it is that we get to create out of the love we have for each other and combine our individual talents and views into a vision that is ours together.” Music played a big part in their wedding as it does in their everyday lives. Their love of Vermont led them to be married in that state in September 2011, where marriage equality was already the law but still four years away from being nationally recognized. Originally from Austin, Texas (Mark) and upstate New York (Jim), Mark and Jim have lived just outside New York City since they met through mutual friends in 2001. You’ll see them walking their beloved hound dog Lily in Lenoir Nature Preserve, one of their favorite spots along the Hudson River near where they live. To see their video of “When It Goes,” visit the Video page. Their music explores such themes as the passage of time, gratitude, being true to oneself, and living life to its fullest, and their sound has been described as part folk, part art song, and very much their own. As with all their songs, they write first and foremost the words they themselves need to hear and hope others will find meaning in them as well. All we have is this moment and the mystery of whatever lies ahead. The title song of their first CD, “When It Goes,” celebrates the everyday life of a couple grateful for the small moments, aware that each moment passes and is gone. ![]() His doing so in his sixties is one explanation for both the “Old Dogs” and “New Tricks” parts of their band name. After they wrote their second song, Jim took up the cello so he’d have an instrument to play along with Mark’s guitar. They wrote their first song, “When It Goes,” for the retreat and they’ve been writing together ever since. Starting out as a couple of music lovers who enjoyed singing together and with friends in their home just north of New York City, they ventured into writing their own music after receiving an announcement of a songwriting retreat led by iconic singer-songwriter Dar Williams in the summer of 2014. Their lyric-driven songs ask what it means to be human and how, in the words of the poet Mary Oliver, we can make the most of our “one wild and precious life.” Forming Old Dogs New Tricks is one answer they came up with for themselves. ![]() With Mark on acoustic guitar and Jim on cello, they trade off lead and harmony vocals on originals and covers. Old Dogs New Tricks is husband and husband duo Mark Davis and James Howe.
